Autumn 2
Theme Learning Questions
(History – Discovery and Exploration)
In our History Theme, we will be finding out who travelled to new places and what they discovered. We will ask ourselves: Who were some of the earliest known explorers, and why did they venture out across land? What was the Age of Exploration, and what impact did it have? Who made history by flying across the Atlantic Ocean? Who explored beneath the surface of the oceans? Who made recent history by venturing into Space? Who is making History now with their new adventures? What is there left to explore?
Curriculum Coverage
In Maths, we will be moving on to our second unit on addition and subtraction. Within this area, we will be looking at different methods for adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers. We will also be solving missing number problems, and problems that have more than one step. We will then move onto our unit on shapes, in which we will learn to recognise the properties of various different 2D and 3D shapes.
This half term in English, we will be continuing with the Read Write Inc Phonics Scheme, which is closely linked to a variety of both fictional storybooks and non-fiction books. Within our lessons, we will be exploring a range of grammar, spelling, comprehension and role-play activities in meaningful contexts. We will also be developing our use of vocabulary and punctuation in our writing composition, and finding ways to make our sentences more interesting to the reader. We will continue with our handwriting practice, with the aim of starting to join our letters.
In Science, we will be finding out how we can group animals. We will be asking the questions: What are mammals? What are reptiles? What are fish? What are amphibians? What are birds?
We will explore the similarities and differences between the animal groups as well as the differences between carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
RE sees us looking at the question, ‘Why does Christmas matter to Christians? This will include learning about Advent, and the story of Jesus’ birth. We will also be re-creating the true story of Christmas in our Nativity Play. In PHSE we will be learning about how we can be tolerant and value difference, whilst maintaining positive relationships with others.
