Phonics and Early Reading
At St Paul's we aim to "Start children off on the way they should go..." by ensuring children have access to high-quality teaching in early reading and phonics in Reception, Year 1 and beyond.
Our school follows the 'Read, Write, Inc' phonics programme, delivered daily. The children learn initial sounds (m, a, s, d, t) and are then taught to put these together to make words.
After this, they are introduced to 'Special Friends' such as sh, th and qu and then the long vowel sounds such as ay, ee and igh. The reading books children take home include the sounds children have been taught and are phonetically decodable. The books selected are from the Oxford Reading Tree and Bug Club reading schemes.
Our Phonics and English lead teacher has undertaken additional training in order for St Paul's to become an accredited Read, Write Inc school.
